Trough compass
It is used in navigation and surveying to assist in locating and describing stations and in orientating reconnaissance sketches. This trough compass carries the inscription “Standard Needle”, S.G.O. (Surveyor General’s Office) and was used for calibration of the “Box Compasses” used in the field by surveyors.
Trough compass: A trough compass is a rectangular compass used to determine the magnetic north. Spirit level: It is used to set the table in a horizontal position. There is an air bubble in the level. If the table is fixed horizontally, the bubble rests in the centre.
5.1 The external dimensions of the metal trough shall be 150 x 30 x 20 mm and the iengh of the needle shall be 125 mm. 6.1 GeneraI – All parts of the compass, except the magnetic needle, shall be made of non-magnetic materials.
